Layered Interconnected Grounds
By Aurgho Jyoti
“Layered Interconnected Grounds” seeks to understand ways of utilising pockets
of urban land that may be lying redundant or neglected in a more effective
manner by “reinterpreting Delhi’s urbanism”. It demonstrates how this can be
done through the example of the New Delhi Railway Station. Calling it a “compact
urban district” in their entry, the contestants suggested creating a
multi-layered network running from Central Park in Connaught Place to the New
Delhi Railway Station environs. This would be done by creating various levels
above the railway platforms and interspersing them with greenery and street
furniture. The contestants envisaged the landscaped area – which may be
considered as a generic peripheral park can be replicated at most railway
stations providing multiple uses for the railway belt.
